In 1997, Rand and Carol German commissioned State College, Pennsylvania, sculptor Mark Pilato to produce a nine-foot bronze for their home. In additional to being a collector of bronze sculpture, Dr. German is an expert in the field of powdered metals, serving as Director of the P/M Lab at Penn State University. As they worked together through the design and production of the commissioned piece, German and Pilato concluded that there had to be a better way to produce bronze sculpture. Together, the artist and the scientist decided to find that better way.

What ensued was an exploration for materials and processes that would combine the beauty and solidity of Pilato's artistry with German's knowledge of the theories and behavior of powdered metals. The goal was to produce solid bronze sculpture without the drawbacks associated with traditional foundry mold-making and casting methods.

After two years of research, this goal has been achieved. Together with Julian Thomas, a research assistant in German's laboratory at Penn State and co-inventor of the Process, the Germans and Pilato founded Aesthetic Materials.
